Underwater Meadows in Rutland

Like much of the UK, Seaton Meadows, Rutland’s Coronation Meadow is currently flooded due to the recent heavy rainfall with parts of the reserve having been submerged for most of this week. While recent flooding has caused major disruption to travel and damage to property, winter flooding is actually part and parcel of the ecology and natural cycle of our floodplain meadows. The flood waters can have the affect of adding nutrients to the sites which may disadvantage certain wildflowers but as it is a regular occurrence the flora present is already adapted to such events.  Floodplain meadows are in fact useful as effectively holding areas for flood waters, allowing slow drainage of water into the river channel and helping to protect built up areas ‘downstream’.
