Harpenden Hayfield, part of Harpenden Common, is designated a county wildlife site for the diversity of wildflowers it supports; species such as Harebell, Common Spotted Orchid and Heath Speedwell. An annual butterfly transect is carried out by volunteers and other wildlife such as Red Kites and Mistle Thrush are frequently spotted.
